Lot #228 - great britain postal history Maritime Mail - Ship Letters
Hull. 1847 Entire letter from Leeds to Hull prepaid 2d in cash, a Leeds datestamp on the front, backstamped upon arrival with blue-green "HULL / SHIP LETTER / A 10 JY 1847" deleted by a cloth covered "383" numeral and replaced by a Hull c.d.s. An exceptional use of a Ship Letter datestamp applied in error to an inland letter, similar to the London Packet Letter error in the following lot. Photo on Page 31.

London. 1845 Entire letter from Lynn to London posted unpaid and charged 2d, a boxed "PACKET LETTER" (Rob. P4) applied in error and obliterated by the London numeral "5" in diamond and horizontal oval of bars, datestamps of Lynn and London. An extraordinary error, the only Packet Letter applied in error to an inland letter we have recorded, although a couple of similar Ship Letter errors are known (see lot above). Photo on Page 31.

1814 Printed certificate from Fort Monckton, certifying that Daniel Propert is serving as a Private in Captain Roch£s Company of the Royal Cardigan Regt. of Militia, being a substitute for David Edwards, balloted man for the parish of Llandewibrevy, and has served for over 11 years. Headed from Private Propert and countersigned, sent from Gosport to Deal prepaid at the 1d soldiers rate.

1838 Receipt for £15 with an embossed 6d receipt stamp, folded to just 67x63mm, headed "From Wm Mallinder Corp. 1st Bn G. Gds" and posted from London to Whittington, Derbyshire, prepaid at the 1d soldiers rate, the reverse with boxed "BROADWAY / WESTMINSTER". A fine small letter.

1873-74 Officers letters to Boston, Lincolnshire, the first bearing 6d pale buff pair each cancelled "466" at Liverpool with a red "PAID / LIVERPOOL / BR. PACKET" c.d.s on the front; the second with a single 6d pale buff cancelled in manuscript with a "6d" charge, the stamps further cancelled "466", backstamped with a "LIVERPOOL / BR. PACKET" c.d.s in black. Opening tears, still an unusual pair, possibly from West Africa. (2).
