1911 KGV 1a Carmine, upper left corner block of forty (8x5), horizontal gutter separating rows 4 and 5, each stamp overprinted "CANCELLED" (Samuel type 25), a few split perforations above the lower row and some buckling to the vertical perforations between columns 2/3 and 6/7, otherwise fine unmounted mint, a scarce and impressively large block from the printers archives. Also a single 1a with larger diagonal "CANCELLED" overprint. (41)....

Lot #1134 - india Wreck Covers
1858 Cover from Cawnpore to England charged 6d with boxed "INDIA UNPAID, Cawnpore, Calcutta and London datestamps. A small hole to the address panel and edge staining, explained by the cachet "Saved from the wreck / of the Ava" on the reverse. The P.&O. "Ava" struck rocks and sank on February 10th, eighty miles off Trincomalee; the mail was subsequently recovered by divers. Photo on Page 145.

1869 (Sep 2) Cover from Edinburgh to India, water damaged with the stamps washed off, the reverse bearing the explanatory label "Recovered from wreck of the £Carnatic£", tied by arrival datestamps of Bombay (Nov 13), Travelling Post Office N.W.P and Umballa. The P.&O. "Carnatic" was wrecked off Shadwan Island on September 13th with the loss of 30 lives; some mailbags were recovered by divers on October 24th. Photo on Page 145.

1917 Cover from Bournemouth to Calcutta, the stamp washed off and a little stained, with oval "ACCIDENT AT SEA / MONGOLIA / 23 6 17". The P.&O. "Mongolia" struck a mine 60 miles off Bombay and sank with the loss of 23 lives.
