Worldwide Stamps and Postal History

C.H Greswell and W. Windham. 1911 (Sep 9) Bright green London to Windsor envelope (Sep 12, 6PM arrival backstamp of Reading suggesting it was flown on flight 7 on the morning of Sep 12th), the front signed "C.H Greswell" and "W. Windham". Two small scrapes to top edge, otherwise fine and very scarce with signatures of both the pilot and the organiser of the Aerial Post. Photo on Page 16.

Argentina. 1911 (Sep 16) Red-brown emergency printing "flap-embossed" London to Windsor envelope flown in the opposite direction to which it was intended, from Windsor to London. Franked KGV 1/2d and 1d (2) for the correct 2 1/2d rate to Junin, Buenos Ayres with arrival backstamp. Very unusual and scarce. Photo on Page 18.

Belgium and Germany. 1911 (Sep 9) London to Windsor olive-green postcards to Belgium franked KGV 1/2d + 1d (therefore overpaid 1/2d) with Brussels arrival c.d.s on the front (Sept 13), or to Germany franked KGV 1/2d + KEVII 1/2d, both fine. (2).

Hong Kong. 1911 (Sep 14) Green London to Windsor Aerial Post envelope addressed to Hong Kong, with an arrival backstamp (Oct. 9), letter enclosed. Light vertical fold with two tears at upper edge and part flap missing, still a very reasonable looking cover to a very scarce destination. Photo on Page 18.

USA. 1911 (Sep 9) London to Windsor cards (2) and a cover all to the USA, comprising a red-brown postcard written from the Army & Navy Stores only franked 1/2d but not surcharged, a dark green card franked KGV 1/2d + KEVII 1/2d, and a bright green envelope franked 1d with Niagara Falls backstamp (Sep 21). The envelope with minor faults, the cards fine. (3).

1844 Numeral. 1844 (May 1) Large part letter (side flaps removed) with a 1d red (3 margins) cancelled by "498" numeral of Manchester, a clear MY 1 datestamp on reverse and a Wilmslow undated circle on the front. A rare first day use of the numeral cancels which replaced the Maltese Cross on May 1st. Photo on Page 18.

Coloured Cancels. 1850-55 Covers with imperf 1d reds tied by numerals 29, 583 or 720 in blue or 810 in brown, or bearing a perforated 1d red tied by numeral 40 in brown. (5).

Hotels. 1872-1959 Covers (9), stamps and pieces (7), Parcel Post labels (5), a telegram and C.O.P with cancels of the Hotel Cecil (including a registered cover with KEVII 1/2d - 3d), Westminster Palace Hotel, Langham Place Hotel, Grand Hotel Building Eastbourne, Star & Garter Hotel Richmond (also a piece of notepaper with an engraving of the hotel), etc. (26).

1841 (Jan 26) Entire letter from Spilsby to Gloucestershire bearing 1840 2d (faults) tied by a red Maltese Cross with two further strikes on the front. Spilsby applied an additional Maltese Cross to covers between September 1840 and April 1842, 37 such covers being recorded by Rockoff and Jackson in "The Maltese Cross"; just two of these bore two additional Maltese Crosses and just one bore a 1840 2d blue.
