lot # 306 - great britain postal history postage due mail

Compulsory Registration. 1861 Cover from Glasgow to Edinburgh marked "Registered" by the sender but only franked by a 2d blue, endorsed "Posted in common letter box" and handstamped red boxed "REGISTERED / AT / GLASGOW". Marked "Fine 6d", crossed out and increased to 1/-. A large closed tear at left, still a very presentable example of this very scarce 1/- charge. The 1/- fine for letters found to be marked Registered was introduced in November 1856, and was reduced to 8d at the beginning of 1863.
Suggested price: £ 100-120
