(Perf Varieties) 1857, 3¢ dull red, type III, Double and Triple Perfs. Used examples of these two perforation varieties, the triple being exceptionally rare, F.-V.F.

The triple perforation variety with perforations on both sides, is the finest surviving example and was written up in Linns several years ago. A copy of the article accompanies the lot.

(Plate Reconstruction) 1851-52, 3¢ orange brown and dull red. Complete plating reconstruction comprising the five plates used to produce the 1851 orange brown shades (Scott #10, 10A) namely plates 1E, 1I, 2E, 0 and 5E, and all eight plates that yielded the myriad of 1852-57 shades (Scott #11, 11A): plates 1L, 2L, 3, 4, 5L, 6, 7 and 8; some mixed condition but also some sound four margin examples present, generally F.-V.F....

(Plate Reconstructions) 3¢ dull red, type IV, Plate 11 Reconstructions of Early, Intermediate and Late states. Total of 133 mostly used stamps from all three states of the plate, Early: 49 stamps, Intermediate: 36 stamps and Late: 48 stamps, some better positions present including double transfer of rosettes and lower part of stamp (91R11L), Damaged transfer above lower left rosette retouched (10R11i, 10R11L) and Left frame line...

(Plate Varieties) 1851, 3¢ orange brown, type II, 2 Lines Recut in Lower Right Triangle. Position 57L0, rich color, large margins to barely touched at bottom, tied by large Boston "Paid" grid cancel on 1852 small ladies cover to Walpole N.H., red "Boston '3cts' 19 Jan" cds.

(Plate Varieties) 1857, 3¢ dull red, type III, Major Double Transer. Position 87R15, double transfer with rosettes double and line through "postage" and "three cents", tied by manuscript "June 11 1861" postmark on cover to St. Paul Minn.; tiny perf tear, Fine and rare variety.

Position 71L18 which clearly shows large plate crack extending through the entire width of the stamp, deep rich color, tied by "Washington City D.C. Jan" cds on cover to Portsmouth N.H.; flap tear, Very Fine, a very scarce on cover usage of this cracked plate variety, ex-Cochrane.

All four known positions of the so-called "Phantom E" variety comprising used: 61R10i, 61R10L, 98R10i, 98R10L; accompanied by a used 61R10E, which is the position prior to the double transfer variety; some faults, F.-V.F.
