That was a series of sporting events that took place in Athens in the years: 1859, 1870, 1875 and 1888-1889 and was the first substantial attempt in modern history to revive the Olympic Games. Obv: Head of King George I. Rev: Legend "ΑΓΩΝΟΘΕΤΗΣ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΗΣ ΖΑΠΠΑΣ / ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑ ΑΘΗΝΗΣΙ ΑΩΟ." within wreath. Engraved by Barre. Holed. (Chase 636). Extra Fine plus.
Restrike (Bronze, 50mm, 49gr, 12h) of the original medal that was awarded to winners during the 1st Modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Obv: Zeus is holding the Goddess of Victory with a vertical inscription "ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑ" on the left. Rev: View of Acropolis with the inscription "ΔΙΕΘΝΕΙΣ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ" around the perimeter on top and "ΕΝ ΑΘΗΝΑΙΣ / 1896" at bottom and sign by the engraver at 4:30h. Uncirculated.

Obv: Central effigy of a seated Athena, holding a scepter and extending a laurel wreath over a Phoenix rising from flames and Acropolis with the Parthenon at the peak in the background. Rev: Legend "ΔΙΕΘΝΕΙΣ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ ΑΘΗΝΗΣΙ 1906" within laurel wreath. Engraved by N. Lytras and struck by W. Pittner. (Chase 891). Extra Fine.
